Let me start by being really clear…Curvy Girls Workout Too! I have always been a thick girl that struggled with my weight. In my 20’s it was very easy for me to bounce back, oh but when them 30’s crept on a sis…I was looking how I was looking! Body image is something that I have struggled with off and on. One minute I care about what others say, the next who got time to figure out others thought. But in all actuality this journey is not about the weight loss, the thoughts of others but a change in my lifestyle to live a healthier and fulfilling life.
About 6 months ago, I decided enough is a dog-gone enough. I mean don’t get me wrong for the last 10 plus years I have done extremely well with being confident about myself and loving myself. However the line was drawn when my knees started shaking like a salt shaker when I walked down the stairs in heels. Even more so screaming for one of the kids to just bring me something from downstairs because I just didn’t feel like blowing and puffing trying to find air from somewhere! I reached out to an awesome trainer name Tamar Licalzi who I gave specific instructions to. The first thing I said to her was “Girl I love being thick and I love my assets, Im not trying to lose none of that” And her next words was “Honey, trust me, you will be healthy and curvaceously beautiful”.
So I showed up Day 1 and quit everyday for at least the first month until I begin to drop the pounds. I was excited and nervous. Excitement from the scale, nervous because I didn’t want it to come back. However I saw a change in my attitude towards working out, I began to love it. I fell in love with the way that my mindset changed! So of course I believe sharing is caring.
Here are five things to do change your lifestyle into a healthy one:
1. Mentally commit to a lifestyle change: Of course everyone wants to look better which will essentially in certain instances will help you feel good about yourself. Nonetheless no matter who you are, you will make excuses as to why you don’t need to work out if its not a something you have made up in your mind. Chile they kill me saying “Your pretty for a big girl” Fat, skinny or in different Im still killing the game. So change you mindset to I want this to be a forever healthy lifestyle change and you won’t quit in the middle of continuous progress.
2. Exercise Daily: One thing that is a pet peeve for me is going to the gym to look at others not sweat. I have a love for working out which I challenge myself to work harder and be even more sweatier and gross than the day before. Find a trainer or workout routine that you love!! This will make you keep going. Yes you are going to be tired as you should be. If you exercise and you are not then you have reach your peak and its time to up your workout. I attempt to work between 5 to 6 days a week. If I miss a few days or something comes up, I don’t beat myself up, I just deal with life and keep going. I mean this is a lifestyle change.
3. Eating Healthy: At first this is something that I had completely wrong. Can I be real with you, if I want to eat cookies, cakes and pies I WILL! I just now eat them in moderation and discipline myself. But you not about to catch me in these streets looking cray-cray because I have a craving. I don’t particularly have an exact meal plan but I make sure that I include vegetables (I still don’t like them but I guess), fruits and water. Again this journey is a lifestyle change so don’t deprive yourself just remember to indulge and
4. Throw the Entire Scale Away: So from the looks of things it probably appears that I have lost a lot of weight which I have but not as much as people think I have. I am proud to have lost 30 pounds. At first I got really obsessed with the scale. It really just lost its way to the other side of the scale…lol. But when I started doing side-by-side pictures I saw how I was losing a lot of inches and looking smaller. Its because I lift weights. And like you I thought I was going to look like Hulk Hogan long lost cousin, but lifting weights burns fat and builds your muscle.
5. Love yourself through the process: No matter what size I have been I have learned to love all of me at whatever size I have been. When I began to love me from the inside out I stop trying to validate myself based on what society thought I should be. I just started loving the transformation and the way I felt. I love how I keep making positive changes mind, body and soul.
Stop allowing society to make you feel that you have to be a certain size to change the way you look or feel. In whatever you do, do it because its what you want to do with your life. Curvy girls most certainly do workout. For me its not about just loosing weight, but its about making a lifestyle change to live a better life!
